Take a walk through the streets of one of
the United States’ “most walkable” cities and delight in the atmosphere, the
ambiance, the beauty of the port city that is Tacoma, Washington.
When it became the western end point of the Northern Pacific Railroad in
1873, Tacoma was coined as the “city of Destiny”. Referred to as the urban
heart of the South Puget Sound, the city of Tacoma has been a popular
destination for a lot of immigrants – the city being the second largest in
the Puget Sound area and the third largest in Washington. Read through the Tacoma yellow pages and you will discover that this place
is home to a diverse mixture of people from different cultural and racial
backgrounds, of which the majority is earning middle class income. This city could also boast of thriving commerce and industry. Tacoma
businesses include several bigwig international companies. Shoppers will
also be delighted to find the largest shopping center in Tacoma, which is
the Tacoma Mall, where they can hop from stores the likes of Macy’s,
Nordstrom, JC Penney, and Sears to name a few. Any Tacoma travel guide you find will most likely never fail to mention the
many attractions that Tacoma has. This includes Point Defiance Park, which
is one of the largest urban parks in the country. Titlow Beach will also be
an interesting site to mention – as it is a popular scuba diving area. Of
course, the landmarks will always be mentioned too. These landmarks include
a fire station that has been there since 1907, a fireboat that was built in
1929 (and is open to the public for exploration), the Murray Morgan Bridge
(there since 1911) and so many more.
It can also be said that this city is rich in art and culture. You will find
that the city caters to multiple art galleries, theaters, museums and
encourages a lot of performing arts. Worthwhile mentioning is the Museum of
Glass known for its iconic structure. Due to the fact that the city has
affordability and that inspiration can be derived from the renaissance theme
that the city exudes, artists or anyone with an appreciation for art and
beauty can definitely enjoy making this city their home. The city and its community also play their part in ensuring that they
contribute to the general improvement of the environment. Various drives to
maintain open space, open water, recycling and green buildings are being
made both by endeavors from concerned citizens and the city government
itself. Structures like the EnviroHouse serve as a model to encourage both
Tacomans and anybody interested enough to pay attention to follow the lead
and create homes that are environment-friendly with green buildings, natural
landscaping and suggested techniques to help save and maintain the beauty of
this planet. |
